We have two touching works that were written for and read to us this
evening.
The first is a poem whose authors are my Uncle Marshall and Aunt Judy.
The next tribute is penned by my most senior friend, Todd.
A toast to our favorite nephew, Dave
About whom we both want to rave
He is silly at times, but has talent with rhymes
And his shekels he knows how to save.
When he told us he longed for a sweetheart
And from childhood he soon would depart
He gave serious thought
About the woman he sought
To marry, and a family to start.
Then one day when the telephone rang
it was David with news that he sang
Twas dear Goldy he fell for At the Matzo Ball held here
And in love he had fallen with a bang
So in winter when the Midwest was cold
We went to Venezuela so it could be told
That with family and some friends
Goldy and David exchanged wedding bands
And pledged always to have and to hold.
Our toast that we offer tonight
Is one filled with love and delight
The words come from Ogden Nash
Whose advice is worth much more than cash
And if heeded, could prevent a lover's fight.
"To keep your marriage brimming,
with love in the loving cup.
Whenever you're wrong, admit it;
whenever you're right, shut up!"
Goldy, don't think for a minute
We'd offer a toast without you in it
You now are a Flapan
And here's what's to happen
Our affection for you will be infinite.
May you continue to cherish each other
As husband and wife, as friends and lovers
May your home ring with laughter
Forever after
As life offers new paths to discover.
Good health and success without measure
Your family and friends are your treasure
The verse that I quoted
Ogden Nash as I noted
Will provide a sweet life without pressure.
Todd and I have been friends for over 25 years. I was quite touched by his tribute:
My name is Todd Lazar, and I have been great friends with Dave since fourth
grade. David
first transferred to my school in fourth grade from Arlington Heights. Needless
to say,
he made an immediate impact on the school.
Everyone knew who Dave was, because he was quite unique--as you all know. Like
the other
kids, I wasn't quite sure what to make of him, because he dressed a little
differently,
read out loud better than all of us, and had quite an excitable personality.
It took an arranged "get-together" by our teacher Mrs. Weinberg to finally get
us to play
together. I followed Dave to his house after school and played his favorite
game,
Monopoly--which I gratefully won.
I remember that day as one of the most interesting
times in my life.
Not only was Dave totally amusing, but he was such a nice person. We have stood
by each
other to this day, and I am so happy Dave met such a terrific person in Goldy.
Goldy is
such a smart person--who can match wits with Dave, and has a great heart to
match. I
wish you both the best in your life together and look forward to our friendship
for the
rest of our lives.
Mazel Tov!
