Goldy's poem

This is the poem that I wrote for Goldy.
I presented it to her at our rehearsal dinner, at El Jaleo in El Hatillo in Caracas, on December 20, 2003.

Check out the song I wrote in her honor.

It was a cold and rainy night on Purim 2001,
The day had been dark too, there wasn’t any sun,
I went again to the annual party, just looking for some fun,
I sure didn’t think I could hit a homerun.

As the DJ played yet another oldie,
I looked across the breadtable, glad it wasn’t moldy,
That is when I saw her, I knew I had to meet Goldy.

We danced, talked, drank, and had a blast,
I tried to pace myself, didn’t want to go to fast,
Hanging with her was so fun, the time quickly passed,
But I wanted her phone number to be my last.

I found out she lived on Sheridan Road,
I hoped for her one day I could create an ode,
But I was blown away by her first abode,
Down in Venezuela, where they talk in code.

We talked to each other almost every day,
We never ran out of things to say,
We’d go to movies, on walks, the neighborhood café,
We even discussed the same Monet.

I went down to visit her family and country at the end of the year,
They were so welcoming, that I soon had no fear,
We had such a great time, I may have shed a tear,
Our love was growing into the stratosphere.

The next year saw us through some ups and downs,
But we made it through together, with very few frowns,
We took some trips, visited some other towns,
Sweet nothings seemed to be the predominant sounds.

In August her job was done, she had to leave,
To be apart was something that we did not want to believe,
But we were sad together, I remember she wept on my sleeve,
We decided to continue, after all that we had achieved.

She came back to visit three months hence,
We hoped our relationship would not be tense,
And it wasn’t, it turned out to be just as intense,
That we still loved each other was just common sense.

Our relationship continued to develop, it was now after spring,
Being with Goldy continued to make me sing,
So one night we went out to eat something,
And at our favorite Cuban restaurant, I offered her a ring.

She accepted, and we set the wedding date for December 21st,
It all happened so fast, we barely rehearsed,
While I was a bit nervous about going into this headfirst,
I was also so excited and in love that my heart could have burst!

So here we are, participating in the ultimate commitment of love,
There’s no greater feeling in the world to speak of,
We are here because we want to be, we did not need a shove,
We go together and fit like a glove.

What the future holds, we cannot know,
Stay tuned, it will be an incredible show,
As life goes on, our love can only grow,
When I am in her presence, I am all aglow,

Of course, all this I think I knew long ago.
Maybe since I first said hello,
More than just for her HBO,
In any season, summer or snow,
Look at this, I cannot stop my crow,
Bottom line is she is now my beau,
I wouldn’t have it any other way, this I know,
I love you Goldy, that is not pajudo,
Or in other words, te quiero!

I also wrote a song for Goldy.  While I didn't have the chutzpah to sing it that evening, I am still proud of it, despite its hokey/cheesiness/cutre.

Sung to the tune of Fiddler on the Roof's "To Life!"

To life, to life, to Goldy,
My honey, my sweetie, my wife,

When we met on that Purim night, I knew that it was so right,
Drink, L’Chaim, to life, to life, to Goldy,
My baby, my esposa, my wife,

Here’s to the husband I’ll try to be, here’s to my bride-to-be,
Drink, L’Chaim, to life, to life, to Goldy,
Srta, C@rbun@ru, Flapan

Together with all of us, as we get married in Caracas,
Drink, L’Chaim, to life, to life, to Goldy,
My future, forever, my wife,
Drink, L’Chaiiiiiiim, TO LIFE!
